    Built Installation

    “What if structures could sing?”

Timbre (pronounced tam-ber) is an immersive installation in which differing columns double as musical instruments brought to life through human interaction. The word ‘timbre’ refers to ‘the quality of tone distinctive of a particular singing voice or musical instrument.’ Inspired by its similarity to the word ‘timber,’ timbre merges the languages of music and buildings, inspiring a new way of perceiving both.

Crafted from building materials, the musical columns invite visitors into a discoverable tonal world. Timbre encourages joyful expression, exuberance, and playfulness in interaction. Nostalgic, child-like activities like running one’s hand along fence posts and feeling the percussive quality, playing a musical instrument, or the sound of wind chimes are all reference points for Timbre.

    Presented in partnership with Swinerton.
