  • Hazardous Waste disposal is a mystery to many people, and a half can of latex paint is of one of the many liquids that can’t just be thrown in the trash or poured down a drain. A quick web search on the topic reveals that in Washington (and many other states) you must completely harden the paint before putting in the garbage. If hardening is done inside the can, it makes it impossible to recycle the steel or plastic container. So, we decided to harden the paint in a more productive way.

At Urban ArtWorks, we have many of those half cans of paint. We started casting these blocks for fun, but also hope to inspire others makers and designers to be cognizant of the materials that are cast into the waste stream when projects are completed.

Festival goers are invited to examine the bricks Urban ArtWorks is producing and discuss potential applications in design projects. Urban ArtWorks is an organization that creates public art to empower youth and transform communities.
