Presented by:

  • CommonForm

  • Team: Artistic Director – Vladimir Kremenović

This Pop-Up Experience will include a performance preview by CommonForm, followed by a conversation with the artists from Via and Velocity.

UTOPIA: space is a durational, site-responsive performance set in Freeway Park, celebrating the work of Angela Donadjieva, the immigrant woman who designed Freeway Park’s landscapes. Featuring dance by Vladimir Kremenović and CommonForm, installation design by VIA Architecture, and offerings by scholastic and artistic contributors, the project brings us together to steward our communal reemergence from isolation and rediscovery of public life.

This is the third performance in the UTOPIA series, an ongoing art project started by Kremenović in 2019 to explores the heritage of brutalism, contradictions between communism and democracy, the lasting implications of Yugoslavia’s dissolution, and their personal experiences with the Bosnian War and immigration to the United States.

UTOPIA: space activates the Freeway park area by transforming it into an ongoing art-making hub. Beginning in July, a diverse team of artists, architects, scholars, and collaborators will visit the park weekly in order to engage with the history, architecture, and communities in the park through open rehearsals, installations, conversations, and more. Inspired by the artists draw attention to landscape architecture and invite passers-by to experience familiar spaces in unexpected ways. The “audiences” become active collaborators as their time spent directly/indirectly interacting with the artists becomes an integral part of the work. UTOPIA: space provides a unique, accessible insight into the creative process and creates opportunities for the public to examine the roles of art and design in everyday life.

Presented by Seattle Design Festival, Freeway Park Association, with additional support by Velocity Dance Center, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and funding by 4Culture.

This performance will take place in the SDF Block Party Pop-Up Zone!
