What is your cultural background? What is something that visually represents your culture? What is something you love about your culture? What is something you feel is misunderstood about your culture?

“Breaking the Pattern” will be a deconstructed image of a Seattle Landmark that will be made up of “pixels” that up close, will reflect the different cultures and backgrounds of Seattle community members and landmarks current and forgotten, that make up the Seattle community. With this installation, we are also going to preemptively fill in landmarks that depict different aspects of our city. While we look to include recognizable landmarks that still stand today, we also want to point out the areas in our city that have drastically changed over the years as a result of gentrification and historical events. This will bring to light some of the harmful tactics that have played a role in stripping cultural representation that exists in our city.

As participants interact with the installation, not only will they learn about the history of Seattle neighborhoods, but also contribute their experience as community members.
