Communication Unmasked is an installation that features a web of masks to represent the burdens on communication we are shedding as we EMERGE into a post-pandemic world. Volunteers with Architects Without Borders Seattle (AWBS) and Crescent Builds developed the installation to show communication obstacles we have faced through COVID, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and meeting in virtual spaces. AWBS volunteers work in collaboration with underserved communities to deliver ecologically sensitive, culturally appropriate, life-changing design right here in Seattle and around the world. Cross-cultural communication is essential for AWBS projects, and even in non-COVID times, AWBS volunteers and clients must work together to overcome communication challenges to design in collaboration.

Please be inspired by the installation, and look for messages in the web of masks, a representation of how we can continue to communicate through obstacles. Please do not touch the installation.

Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors and donors, the Seattle Design Festival was able to fund this partner, to engage youth in the design process, leverage co-design, and improve the community engagement process,  inspiring action with lasting impact.
