Presented by:

  • Northwest Universal Design Council

  • Washington Assistive Technology Act Program

  • Attendees will be drawn to this installation by the various hands-on demonstrations it will offer including contrasting views on solutions to common problems. This installation will provide visual demonstrations of how universal design principles create accessibility for all. These demonstrations will allow visitors to see and compare the impacts of universal design and conventional design on the usability of our homes. Installing a ramp at an entrance enables a wheelchair user as well as someone who uses a stroller, for example.

Universal design considers all aspects of an environment with the goal of making them usable and useful to people with diverse abilities and preferences. WATAP staff will be on hand to provide demonstrations and share information about innovations and technologies that support various tasks and spaces. Effective solutions remove obstacles and hazards, are easy to understand and intuitive to use. NWUDC promotes incorporating Universal Design principles, products and processes into new or renovated built environments; illustrating options, offering resources and empowering people and communities to ask for better design solutions.
