THINKERCYZE is a weekly virtual design challenge from some of our favorite designers that anyone can do – brought to you weekly this summer by the Seattle Design Festival Committee with support by Microsoft. Every challenge has been crafted for all ages & technical abilities; you don’t need to be a designer to THINKERCYZE – just willing to think like one. The gallery of submissions for the week, along with new challenges, will be released every Wednesday morning July 8 – August 26.

This week’s challenge – Design an accessible, beautiful sidewalk with Tiffany Chen

 

For this week’s THINKERCYZE we’d like to explore what it means for an experience to be both accessible and beautiful. Oftentimes, designers claim that there is a “trade-off” between accessibility and aesthetics. Some individuals in the disability community will also note that assistive technologies (both software and hardware) tend to look clunky, different, and “othering”.  We hope to start a conversation around redefining the normative definitions of “beauty” and “aesthetics” to include thinking around accessibility, and we will do this by designing an accessible, beautiful sidewalk.
