Presented by:

  • ecoTHRIVE Housing

  • Team: ZsaZsa Floyd, ecoTHRIVE board member; Susannah Hale, ecoTHRIVE board member; Carrie Hawthorne, communications consultant; Denise Henrikson, ecoTHRIVE board member; Serina Holmstrom, ecoTHRIVE board member; Pat Park, real estate developer; Susan Russell, ecoTHRIVE board member; and Emma Sutton, project manager

“What do you need to THRIVE?” is the question we asked when we took art supplies into the community to listen- and bear witness- to people’s stories of “home” and “homelessness.” We did not set out to become housing developers, but through the inspiration of hundreds of conversations, that is what has EMERGED. ecoTHRIVE Housing is committed to creating beautiful, affordable, resident-owned villages by bringing together two forms of shared equity ownership: Limited Equity Cooperative + Community Land Trust; building small & green; and integrating sustainable financing. Our goal is to create replicable, affordable housing villages that nurture community and human resilience- and joy!- as we adapt to an ever-changing world and shifting climate.

Our team is committed to centering community input throughout all aspects of our work: from inception through design, construction, and stewardship. We’ve hosted dozens of listening sessions, a design charrette that included people who have experienced homelessness, and conversations with civic & government leaders. We’ve consulted with legal and real estate experts to develop a solid business plan and pro forma. In 2019, we worked with the City of Burien to create an interim ordinance that relaxes current zoning requirements to test innovative models of affordable housing (affordable to people earning 50% AMI). This temporary ordinance is only open through 2022, so we plan to purchase property THIS YEAR so we can develop affordable housing through that program and create a pilot village that can be replicated- by us or anyone who is committed to this community-led process.
Come experience what inspired us: Art + Conversations! See what we’re up to -our plans and our process- and let’s talk about how we can bring our collective passion, compassion, and brilliance together to create the future we want to live into.

Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors and donors, the Seattle Design Festival was able to fund this partner, to engage youth in the design process, leverage co-design, and improve the community engagement process,  inspiring action with lasting impact.
