What’s New at SDF 2024: WHAT IF?

This year’s theme is more than a prompt — it’s a catalyst for reimagining, reinventing, and rejoicing in infinite possibilities.

While we’re not entirely reinventing the Festival, the Planning Team is excited to introduce some new elements, to help us explore the impact SDF can have on our community.

Sustainability Commitment

With the support of the SDF Council, we have introduced NEW requirements for Built Installation Partners. To help reduce waste production, teams should commit to one of the following:

· Partner with a community organization who will take ownership of all or part of the installation after the Festival.

· Commit to reusing materials in your own future work.

· Prioritize the use of materials that can be donated.

· This year SDF has partnered with the University of Washington Fabrication Labs to collect:

· Clean wood: Must be free of fasteners and adhesives, with a minimum length of 18 inches.

· Plywood: CDX or higher grade, minimum 24 inches x 12 inches.

· Plastic Panels: Acrylic, polygal, etc.

· Metal: Preference for steel and aluminum, must be free of glue or adhesives

ACE Mentor Program Partnership to Increase Youth Engagement

In collaboration with ACE Mentor Program of Seattle, SDF is excited to provide opportunities for young designers participating in the ACE Program to engage with design teams presenting built installations at the 2024 SDF Block Party. Interested partners will indicate their interest in Section 3 of their submission form. We encourage design team to consider how they can incorporate youth designers into their process!

Mainstage @ SDF Block Party

The Festival Planning team is excited to make SDF 2024 a true celebration of the SDF Block Party and will be transforming the “Virtual Mainstage” into a physical “Mainstage.” Consider taking the stage at the SDF Block Party with an engaging presentation, panel, performance, or skill share that aims to empower and/or celebrate our design communities! This in-person event gives you the platform to share your programming in front of a live audience for up to 1 hour, followed by the opportunity to connect with the community in a Q+A.
