Soundscape is inspired by the simple kid’s toy string can telephone, composed of two cans and a taut string. Playing with that concept, this pavilion features hundreds of tin can phones, where visitors can share playful interactions through abstract sound – a secret, a thought, a story, a laugh.
In a departure from the pandemic, when many of us were forced to rely on digital technology to stay in touch, this installation returns to analog acoustics and the opportunity to physically connect. Soundscape repurposes the humble tin can to create a pavilion of can-phones, with an interior web of strings forming hundreds of connections between can receivers. The playful interaction and thrill of exchange – a secret, a thought, a story, a laugh – frames an oratorium of shared connection. We invite visitors of all ages and backgrounds to contribute to this soundscape.
