The Seattle Design Festival is a platform for bold design conversations. We believe that design is for everyone and that inclusive co-design practices are essential to shaping an equitable Seattle. We are multidisciplinary, socially engaged and civic minded.
Somata is a temporary wood structure, designed as a reusable video booth that can be occupied by passers-by for Fred Hutch’s 25th anniversary Obliteride fundraiser event. Somata collects feedback from participants about WHY and WHO inspires them to support research for a cure for cancer through a hands-on activity. This installation invites community innovation by documenting humanity’s stories and ideas. Participants will enter the installation at one opening, interact and engage once inside, and will exit through another opening. In honor of Fred Hutch’s dedication to cutting edge research to cure cancer, the design team wanted to create a form that was literally outside-the-box. A form that met the criteria, while sparking curiosity. One inspired by nature, as well as the image of interlocking hands – the human expression of compassion and care. Giving strength from one to another when needed.
The structural approach to Somata’s arched, geometric form is a novel solution. Like linked hands – the installation is a hybrid of “stick” reinforced panels (think veins in a leaf) and a Portal Frame (think ribs). This solution creates a sturdy form, while allowing for deconstruction into smaller sizes, flat-packed and re-deployed year after year. The 2” x 2” reinforcements, trapezoidal panels, and portal frame combine to create healthy neurons, defined by the Somata at the center, whose purpose is made complete by the existence of humans forming the vital, synaptic process of sending messages from one to each other; a message that says “I am here for you. I will fight for you.”
