SING TO ME: Material-Driven Soft Architecture

Step into SING TO ME, a responsive textile design where fabric transforms sound into color. Visitors are invited to sing, create rhythm, or simply play music from their phones as the textile surface reacts in real time with dynamic visual effects unique to each interaction. Every sound leaves temporary traces across the fabric, transforming individual and collective participation into a living material experience shaped by people and their surroundings.

Playful, intuitive, and welcoming to all ages and abilities, SING TO ME encourages experimentation, curiosity, and spontaneous collaboration between friends, families, and strangers. There is no right or wrong way to participate—each sound creates a different visible response through the material activation, turning the design into a continuously evolving shared sensory environment.

Combining responsive material and soft sound-reactive technology, the project explores how architectural elements can become flexible, adaptive, and responsive. Sound is translated into heat, activating embedded thermochromic materials that shift color and reveal changing surface patterns across the textile.

Designed as an accessible walk-up experience, the proposal supports multiple forms of engagement through sound, light, temperature, color, and tactile interaction. Festival-goers can safely participate through intuitive non-contact interaction, while responsive heat variations and changing textile surfaces can also be experienced through touch. Reflecting the Seattle Design Festival 2026 theme, SING TO ME reimagines fabric as responsive soft architecture—an adaptive environment continuously reshaped through collective presence, environmental change, and transformation.
