Trash to Temptation: Making Sustainable Fashion Hard to Ignore is a Visual Conversation About Sustainability by Sandra Luks

Estonian designer, photographer, and researcher Sandra Luks shares a presentation built around fashion photography, upcycled garments, and post-consumer textiles. The work explores whether sustainability can be communicated through visual appeal rather than moral argument — and what that might look like in practice.

Drawing on her recent MA thesis, Luks walks through a series of fashion photographs featuring garments and artefacts made from post-consumer textiles and unconventional waste materials. The goal: engage people who don’t usually care about fashion — and get them talking about it anyway.

Instead of guilt, this work uses desire. Instead of moralising, it uses provocation. What happens when waste becomes beautiful, excessive, sexy, and impossible to ignore? Can the same visual tools used to sell more be turned around to help us buy less, value what already exists, and rethink fashion entirely?

The talk includes process images, photo concepts, and reflections on upcycling, ethics, photography, and visual culture. It’s not only for fashion or design audiences — it’s also for people who don’t usually think about sustainability, because the underlying aim of the work is to start that conversation without preaching.
